Dave’s Romper Stomper Date

Back in 1992, my Australian friend Dave began courting a young lady whom he fancied for a long time. Sharon had been through a very bad relationship so was weary of getting involved with any more idiots. The last thing she wanted was to be bothered by yet another degenerate.

But Dave was different; he was no dummy. He wanted her to see that he wasn’t the typical demented deviant she was used to dating. So, they spoke frequently on the phone and got to know each other. No pressure. When Sharon was ready, Dave asked her out on a date.

Sharon liked different and had an aversion to boring. So when Dave asked her out for lunch and movie, she began having second thoughts. She thought it sounded dull and cliche. Sharon hated boring and this sounded boring.

Dave, however, knew what he was doing. Lunch gave them more time to get to really know each other without any pressure.

For the movie, the typical fellow would take her to a corny date movie. But not Dave. He found out what she liked so took her to the skinhead movie Romper Stomper.

Now, I’d never think taking a date to movie about a bunch of  neo-Nazi skinhead thugs. Dave and Sharon are both “top blokes,” as they say down under, and as anti-skinhead as you can get. But the movie is unique and different, and that’s the point.

After getting to know Dave, Sharon was smitten. They’ve been together ever since and have had 20 years of a great relationship.

So, how Dave courted Sharon, the same thing can be said about exercise. You’ve got to do like Dave:

1. Get to know your body – Just like Dave gave Sharon an opportunity to get to know him, without pressure, you need to do the same with your body, without pressure. Don’t push too hard too soon.

Find out if you can handle certain movement, how many reps to start with, notice if there’s any pain, or if you’re strong (or not) in certain areas. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced, find out what your body feels and needs.

2. Be unique and interesting – Dave was definitely different. This kept Sharon’s attention. It wasn’t just the initial date but their entire relationship has always been interesting which is why it’s lasted so long. You want your relationship with your fit body to last long, too.

So that’s why your workouts need to be fun, unique and always fresh. Our human bodies have become so accustomed to the shape of the couch and our chairs, that we really need to do go outside the box (literally and figuratively). Otherwise we get stale and loose interest. If you’re always having fun you’ll never get bored or quit.
